The Myth Of The Cheap Crane Inspection

Elevating American Industry

Whiting has been in the material handling business since 1884. We’ve been through good times and bad. We’ve seen many companies come and go during that time. We would like to share some of our experience with you, so that we can grow and partner together. You have many choices when it comes to choosing your crane inspection company. Keep in mind that you should be looking for the best value, not the cheapest price. Most Crane service companies have similar costs: buildings, trucks, equipment and personnel. These expenses remain relatively constant among all companies. The biggest variable cost associated with a crane inspection is the labor. A cheap inspection is usually the result of low paid, poorly trained technician. They working as fast as possible to get as many inspections per day as possible.

These cheap competitors rely on three myths to sell cheap inspections.

  1. By law we meet OSHA standards.
  2. We have lower overhead.
  3. We are just more efficient, plus we want your business

Myth # 1

BY LAW WE MEET OSHA STANDARDS. Believe it or not the OSHA standards for crane inspections are not that stringent. For a” Service Class C” overhead crane, a competitor’s inspector may perform frequent inspections entirely from the ground “just looking” at the crane in operation. Significant wear or maintenance issues may not be immediately apparent, resulting in major repairs and significant work flow disruption down the road. Whiting Services will always get up on the crane to inspect, AND ADJUST, critical crane components. We get up on the working components and inspect, check fluids, lubricate, make brake adjustments and check control panels. Our thoroughness:

  • Keeps cranes running optimally
  • Catches maintenance problems sooner
  • Results in minor repairs vs. major component replacement
  • Is SAFER for you, your employees, and your expensive tooling
  • What part of safety do you want your inspector to skip?

Whiting Services’ inspection process EXCEEDS OSHA standards. We provide a digital inspection report with pictures of areas of concern. We also can customize the inspection to your specific crane, site, or environmental conditions. We are committed to providing excellent service and superior value.

Myth # 2

WE HAVE THE LOWER OVERHEAD.  The “I work out of my garage” argument. Even if this contractor has the correct liability insurance, there are several drawbacks with these types of firms. With only one or two technicians on staff after hours calls are often an issue. The simple act of getting a return phone call can lead you to think twice about this type of company.  These contractors normally don’t stock parts or have a very small supply. As one of the Nation’s largest OEM crane manufacturers we have relationships with all the main component manufacturers and can get you the correct part FAST. In fact our extensive parts inventory means we may already have it in stock. Our bulk purchasing also allows us to get the lowest price possible. Remember the lowest price isn’t the best value if they can’t deliver a competent inspection, by qualified personnel, in a timely manner.

Myth #3

WE ARE JUST MORE EFFICIENT, PLUS WE WANT YOUR BUSINESS:  Whiting Services performs more crane inspections than most companies in our region. If by more efficient they mean faster, they may be right. We take the time to do a quality inspection to provide you with competent, factory trained technicians working to ensure well running, safe equipment. OUR TECHNICIANS ARE NEVER ON COMMISSION! We will never low-ball the inspection price and try to make up the loss on parts or repair sales. By performing a complete and thorough inspection we can offer excellent service and superior value.

Remember the inspection price is a very small percentage of the operating costs of your overhead crane. Long term savings and increased efficiency can be the result of a complete and thorough inspection performed by a professional team of well trained and competent inspectors. Whiting Services has over 134 years’ experience handling your equipment needs. Our great inspection team is backed a team of dedicated and knowledgeable parts and support personnel to keep you running 24/7/365.
